Scale of Guinea's Ebola epidemic unprecedented

CONAKRY - Guinea faces an Ebola epidemic on an unprecedented scale as it battles to contain confirmed cases now scattered across several locations that are far apart, medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres said on Monday.

The warning from an organization used to tackling Ebola in Central Africa comes after Guinea's president appealed for calm as the number of deaths linked to an outbreak on the border with Liberia and Sierra Leone hit 80.

The outbreak of one of the world's most lethal infectious diseases has spooked a number of governments with weak health systems, prompting Senegal to close its border with Guinea and other neighbours to restrict travel and cross-border exchanges.

Figures released overnight by Guinea's health ministry showed that there had been 78 deaths from 122 cases of suspected Ebola since January, up from 70. Of these, there were 22 laboratory confirmed cases of Ebola, the ministry said.

"We are facing an epidemic of a magnitude never before seen in terms of the distribution of cases in the country," said Mariano Lugli, coordinator of MSF's project in Conakry.

It’s no surprise then, that the Downtown Seder he started 15 years ago at the Knitting Factory, his original event space, invited musicians, artists, and entertainers to reimagine the different parts of the seder.

Ehud Olmert Convicted of Bribery Charges Over Holyland Complex

Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was convicted of bribery by a Tel Aviv district court on Monday morning. In addition to Olmert, who was found guilty of two of the four charges against him stemming from his role in the Holyland complex debable, 10 of 13 former officials were convicted as well, the New York Times reports.

The controversy over the Holyland complex came to light in 2010, when it was reported that Olmert, who oversaw the Israel Land Authorities, had allowed the Jerusalem site to become more than 12 times its allotted size. According to the Times, a judge then called it “one of the worst corruption affairs in Israeli history.” In court on Monday, a judge ruled that Olmert had, with the help of his brother Yossi, funneled nearly $143,000 in shekels from Shmuel Dechner, a businessman responsible for obtaining permits.

Turkish military fires into Syria after rocket hits mosque

ANKARA - The Turkish military fired back into Syria on Monday in retaliation for mortar shells and a rocket from over the border that hit a mosque in the town of Yayladagi, the provincial governor's office and local media said.

Three mortar rounds landed on Turkish soil, fired during fighting between the Islamist rebels in Syria and forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad for control of the Armenian Christian village of Kasab, Turkey's Dogan News Agency said.

Islamist insurgents launched an offensive about ten days ago into Syria's Latakia region on the Mediterranean coast, taking both the border crossing and Kasab on the Syrian side.

Since then, Assad has sent army and militia reinforcements, backed by air power, to repulse the rebels, leading to heavy fighting across the strip of territory along the Turkish border.

"Our artillery troops have fired back at the region from where the shots originated," the Hatay governor's office said in a statement on its website.

NATO: Merchant ship shot at in Strait of Hormuz Sunday

DUBAI - Unknown assailants in a speedboat shot at a merchant vessel as it sailed through the Strait of Hormuz between Iran and Oman on Sunday, the NATO Shipping Centre (NSC) said.

The unidentified merchant ship reported being shot at twice from close range from a speedboat carrying six people armed with machine guns, on Sunday morning. It repelled the attack with hoses and the vessel and crew are safe, NSC said.

Although suspected Somali pirates commonly attack merchant shipping in the Gulf of Aden and Somali Basin, attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz - a vital oil and gas shipping route - are rare.

The attack happened on the Gulf of Oman side of the Strait of Hormuz, about 90 minutes after a different merchant ship was approached by two speedboats with crews wearing military clothing, NATO said.

"Two green colored skiffs with three-four persons on board in military clothing and armed with gun machines got to 150 meters of a merchant vessel," the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's merchant shipping alert service said in a statement.

Turkish PM Erdogan seeks voters' support in fierce power struggle

ISTANBUL/ANKARA - Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan turns to the ballot box that has favored him over a decade on Sunday in his battle to ward off graft allegations and stem a stream of damaging security leaks he blames on "traitors" embedded in the Turkish state.

The municipal elections have become a crisis referendum on the rule of Erdogan and his Islamist-rooted AK Party and he has been crisscrossing the nation of 77 million during weeks of hectic campaigning to rally his conservative core voters.

"They are all traitors," Erdogan said of his opponents at a rally in Istanbul, Turkey's commercial capital, on Saturday. "Let them do what they want. Go to the ballot box tomorrow and teach all of them a lesson ... Let's give them an Ottoman slap."

Russia sees no need for Ukraine incursion, Tatars seek autonomy

MOSCOW/BAKHCHISARAY, Crimea - Russia said on Saturday it had no intention of invading eastern Ukraine following its annexation of Crimea, while the Black Sea peninsula's Muslim Tatars demanded autonomy.

US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will meet on Sunday in Paris, the State Department said, as both sides moved to ease tensions in the worst East-West standoff since the Cold War.

In a pivotal political development, Ukraine's presidential election effectively became a two-horse race when boxer-turned-politician Vitaly Klitschko pulled out and threw his weight behind confectionary oligarch Petro Poroshenko.

This sets up a May 25 contest between the man known as the "Chocolate King" and former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko.
