A New Collection of Saul Bellow's Nonfiction Sends Readers Running Back to His Masterful Fiction

The mid-20th century is remembered as a golden age of American Jewish fiction. But were any of its leading lights content to be described as Jewish writers? “I am often described as a Jewish writer,” Saul Bellow observes coolly in a 1974 essay, “Starting Out in Chicago,” which serves as the prologue to There Is Simply Too Much To Think About, a new edition of his collected nonfiction edited by Benjamin Taylor. “In much the same way, one might be called a Samoan astronomer or an Eskimo cellist or a Zulu Gainsborough expert. There is some oddity about it. I am a Jew, and I have written some books. I have tried to fit my soul into the Jewish-writer category, but it does not feel comfortably accommodated there.”

Bellow’s analogies draw a sharp distinction between origin and achievement, what you are born as and what you make yourself into. Of course, this is itself a highly American way of looking at things—the natural attitude in a country where people of all backgrounds come to make themselves anew. “I am an American, Chicago born,” boasts Augie March, the hero of a novel whose title, The Adventures of Augie March, deliberately draws a connection between this 20th-century son of Jewish immigrants and the archetypal American adventurers, Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. Much of the detail of Augie’s life and surroundings is drawn directly from Bellow’s own childhood, and it is natural to think of Augie as a version of Bellow himself, much as the heroes of later novels—Moses Herzog in Herzog, Charlie Citrine in Humboldt’s Gift—are clearly the writer’s surrogates. Yet as has often been observed, Bellow was actually born Canadian, in the Montreal suburb of Lachine in 1915. Not until he was 9 years old did his family move to Chicago (illegally, it is worth noting). Augie the American is not what Bellow was but what he labored to become.

After a Mother’s Death, a Daughter Learns How To Make the Passover Seder Her Own

“I never want to inherit this holiday,” I sighed to my mother over the phone, as we discussed the extensive Passover preparations under way in her house.

She shrugged off my comment with a hearty laugh. She didn’t seem to mind the work—the whole house turned upside down, as plates, silverware, pots, and pans exchanged places for eight days, and shelves and counters were lined with plastic to protect from errant breadcrumbs somehow not scrubbed away. A festival of freedom? Jewish women everywhere know better. But mine was never your Jewish mother-cum-martyr type. She was happy to see Judaism alive and well, and you could almost measure that joy in the chocolate covered matzos, coconut-crusted marshmallows, sugary fruit rings, and nubby horseradish roots piled in every corner of her kosher-for-Passover kitchen.

For Most Jews in Talmudic Times, Marriage Was the Biggest Financial Transaction of Their Lives

Literary critic Adam Kirsch is reading a page of Talmud a day, along with Jews around the world.

Is a Jewish father legally obligated to provide food and shelter for his children? This question might seem like a no-brainer: Nothing is more natural or expected than for a parent to care for his or her child. But is this social and ethical obligation also a legal obligation? The answer, which Daf Yomi readers learned this week in Ketubot 49a, is more complicated than you might expect. According to the mishna, “A father is not obligated to provide his daughter’s sustenance,” and the Gemara draws the obvious corollary: “It is with regard to providing his daughter’s sustenance that he is not obligated, but with regard to providing his son’s sustenance, he is obligated.” This looks like another glaring example of gender inequality in the Talmud: Sons have a greater claim on their father’s resources than daughters.

How Marcy Goldman Turned Matzo Into Candy With One Simple Recipe

In 1985, Marcy Goldman unknowingly created a recipe that would become a staple of Passover kitchens from coast to coast. At the time, she was a freelance food writer and young mother in search of a Passover dessert that her toddler son, Jonathan, would enjoy. So she developed something that could woo the pickiest eater: matzo buttercrunch, a tantalizing candy made from caramel and chocolate swirled on top of pieces of matzo.

It turns out—and herein lies the source of her success and her angst—she wooed just about everyone else, too. In 1986, she published the recipe in The Montreal Gazette. Flash forward three decades, and Goldman’s matzo buttercrunch is among the most popular, and most copied, Passover desserts made by home cooks. Thanks to the viral nature of the Internet, it has become the holiday’s equivalent of the chocolate-chip cookie—a dish so simple, so brilliantly obvious, and so adaptable, it has in many respects, and to Goldman’s chagrin, transcended its original source.

Cutting Back on Food Waste for Passover

Maybe the first week in January was a bit early to stand in the pantry and contemplate all the chametz we would need to eat up before Passover—a bit early, at least by liberal Jewish standards. All the same, there I was, eyeing the biscuit mix, the Bombay Spice crunchy chickpea snacks, the pie crust mix that I bought with my 8-year-old last fall, while there were still local baking apples to be had. Several packages of pasta sat on the shelves, including a bag of organic, soy-based spaghetti I bought in an adventurous mood just after Passover last year and hadn’t touched since. And that was not all. There was some brown rice couscous, and brown rice and white rice, and yellow rice, too. And some yellow taco shells my partner likes.

Usually I’m not one to think this far in advance. But this year, I wanted our annual chametz eat-down to be about something bigger than what food is and isn’t technically permitted during the holiday. I wanted to expand the concept of chametz to address food waste, too. Those uneaten leftovers in the fridge, and the salad mix going limp seemed to me to encapsulate all the puffed-up arrogance so many commentators have ascribed to forbidden Passover food. And all the more so because one in seven Americans is now what experts call “food insecure,” and food production and transportation consumes 10 percent of our country’s energy budget. (Read: greenhouse gases galore.) Something crazy like 31 percent to 40 percent of the food produced in America is wasted somewhere between the farmer’s field and our refrigerator shelves.

How Progressives Belittle Violence Against Jews

The conversation about Jews and “privilege” is finally upon us. Anti-Semitism in word and deed has been increasing in frequency and intensity for over a decade. That’s been true especially in Europe, and recently the problem there has become acute. The war last summer in Gaza stirred more than the usual amount of anti-Israel and anti-Jewish unrest and led some to draw comparisons to the European 1930s. In turn, the coverage of this terrible phenomenon has stirred voices of skepticism, many belonging to self-identified “progressives”—for whom “Jewish privilege” is more likely to be identified as a harm than anti-Jewish prejudice.

To take an example, the campus radical and writer Freddie deBoer pilloried Conor Friedersdorf for a piece in The Atlantic that considered Jewish flight from increasingly hostile conditions in Europe. DeBoer, in turn: mocked the notion of rising anti-Semitism in Europe; implied that it wasn’t real; called for a higher evidentiary standard to prove it; downplayed it as a mere epiphenomenon of American foreign policy; and defocused Jews while centering Muslims as authentic victims of racism. His series of reactions—a sort of five stages of anti-Semitism denial—is worth examining and understanding, particularly as it relates to racism and the concept of “privilege.”
